Sauna vs steam room: the short verdict
Sauna vs steam room comes down to three differences in a UAE home. A sauna is a dry room you can buy as a cabin; a steam room is a wet room an installer builds. A sauna starts at AED 13,999 for an infrared cabin; a steam room at AED 25,000. And a sauna is named in DEWA's wiring rules while a steam generator is not, which changes what the electrician has to plan. Should you choose a sauna or a steam room?
Choose a sauna if you want the lower price, a prefab cabin and the option to place it in an apartment: infrared cabins start at AED 13,999 and traditional cabins at AED 16,950. Choose a steam room if you prefer wet heat and the project already involves a bathroom or a villa wellness room: steam rooms start at AED 25,000 and are built rather than bought as a cabin. A villa wellness room can take both.

Which costs less to buy, a sauna or a steam room?
The sauna, by a clear margin at the entry level. Two-person infrared cabins start at AED 13,999, and stove cabins at AED 16,950 with delivery and installation usually included; the home saunas page lists every size. A steam room is a construction job: compact rooms and steam showers start at AED 25,000, dedicated rooms at AED 50,000, and a full marble room can exceed AED 300,000. Which is easier to wire and run?
Both are sized to the room's volume. Harvia's Vega heaters run 4.5 kW for 3 to 6 m³ up to 9 kW for 8 to 14 m³; its Helix steam generators run 4.5 kW for 2 to 7 m³ and 9 kW for 3 to 17 m³. DEWA's Regulation 4.6.5 names saunas: a separate final sub-circuit, control gear outside the room and 30 mA protection on heater circuits. Steam generators are not named, and we brief a dedicated circuit for them anyway, since the HGX45 runs on a 25 A fuse at 230 V. An infrared cabin, by Harvia's account, plugs into a household socket.
As worked examples at DEWA's October 2026 rates, a 6 kW sauna heater at full output costs AED 1.83 to AED 2.77 an hour and a 4.5 kW steam generator AED 1.37 to AED 2.08. Neither is a measured bill: both assume full output for the whole hour.
Which fits an apartment?
Usually the sauna, as an infrared cabin: Harvia's guidance is a dry indoor room with 5 cm of space around the cabin. A steam room needs wet-area work, and building rules limit it. Emaar does not allow structural works or the removal or coverage of MEP systems in apartments; in Town Square, Nshama's manuals make bathtub conversion and wet-area tile replacement townhouse-only. Dubai Holding Community Management requires an application before any installation in a unit. What does the research measure for each?
We make no health claims for either. The long-term study most often quoted, 2,315 Finnish men followed for a median 20.7 years, studied dry sauna and found that more frequent sauna use was associated with lower cardiovascular and all-cause mortality (Laukkanen 2015); it is observational and says nothing about steam. A 2018 systematic review of dry sauna bathing called for more and better data (review). NHS guidance on pregnancy names saunas, hot tubs and steam rooms together.

- Sauna: an apartment, a budget under AED 25,000, a spare dry room, or a garden cabin.
- Steam room: a villa bathroom being rebuilt anyway, a preference for wet heat, or a wellness room with space for both.

- Who should check with a doctor first?
- NHS guidance on pregnancy notes there is little research on saunas, hot tubs and steam rooms and that you may choose to avoid them because of the risks of overheating, dehydration and fainting. Harvard Health says people with unstable chest pain (angina), poorly controlled high blood pressure or other serious heart issues should avoid hot baths and saunas, and to avoid alcohol before and after. With Raynaud's, the NHS advises avoiding sudden changes in temperature.
