This is where most plunge purchases in the UAE go wrong, and it is the first thing we ask every supplier. DEWA designs Dubai equipment for 48°C in the shade, and the National Centre of Meteorology has recorded 48.8°C at Dubai airport in August. Many chillers are rated for far less. Active Aqua measures its cooling at 36°C and approves its units for indoor use only, while Plunge rates its Pro Chiller Gen 2 to hold 3°C in 49°C air.
So every price we send states the air temperature the chiller is rated for, where it should stand and whether it needs shade. An indoor spot, such as an air-conditioned gym room or garage, makes any chiller's job far lighter. Our summer guide explains what happens when a chiller runs flat out through July.
Get a plunge that works in August
A tub without a chiller starts at AED 2,500 and is only as cold as the ice you pour into it. In a UAE summer that is a lot of ice: rooftop tanks run warm, and getting a 320-litre tub down to the 10 to 15°C Cleveland Clinic suggests for beginners means ice before every session from June to September.
A chiller ends that job. A 1 HP unit costs AED 7,000 to 12,500 on its own, while a tub, chiller and filter bundle starts at AED 7,950, so the bundle is usually the better buy. Several chillers sold here also warm the water to 42°C, so the same plunge works in January. Not sure you will use it? A rental costs from AED 1,800 a month with the chiller included.
Usually yes, and we tell you what applies before anything is delivered. A plunge pool built into the ground counts as a swimming pool to Dubai Municipality, which means registering it and fencing it. The Municipality's wording, any bathing structure that holds 300 mm of water, appears to reach free-standing tubs as well, so we confirm the position for each job. Communities such as DHCM and Emaar add their own approval for work on a villa plot.
Balconies need the building's approval and an engineer's check, because water is heavy: the Dubai Building Code takes it at 1 kN per square metre for every 100 mm of depth. An indoor room is the easy answer, and our apartment guide covers the rest. Before you choose a model, our buying checklist runs through eight checks in order.
Less than most people expect. As a worked example, a 1 HP chiller drawing 1,100 W costs about AED 0.34 to 0.51 for every hour it runs on DEWA's tariff, including the October 2026 fuel surcharge and VAT. How many hours it runs depends on the heat, the lid and the shade. The running costs page has the same sums for Abu Dhabi and the Northern Emirates.
The circuit matters more than the bill. DEWA puts Jacuzzi pumps on 10 mA earth-leakage protection, wants IP55 sockets outdoors and its approval for any change to an installation, and Plunge asks for a dedicated 15 A circuit on its 120 V US supply. We ask each supplier what their unit needs, and an electrician confirms what your board can take.
Heat, and where we work
Most people who buy a plunge want heat next, because the two work as a pair. One message gets you our price on both: a contrast therapy setup puts a sauna and a plunge a few steps apart, and a home wellness room builds sauna, steam and plunge into one suite.
We send you our price on infrared cabins from AED 13,999, traditional indoor saunas from AED 16,950, outdoor saunas from AED 22,399 and custom-built sauna rooms from AED 45,000. A traditional heater is the bigger electrical job: Harvia's 6 kW Vega suits a 5 to 8 m³ room, and DEWA wants every sauna on its own circuit. Start with home saunas, an infrared sauna, an outdoor sauna or a sauna room built to measure. Gyms and hotels have commercial saunas.
A steam room starts at AED 25,000 for a compact build, and a dedicated marble room can pass AED 300,000. The room's volume decides the generator, so it is the first thing we ask before we price it.
Outdoor hot tubs start at AED 18,999 for a two-seat hard-shell spa, and mid-range spas run AED 26,999 to 49,800. Dubai Municipality names hot tubs as pools, so a villa hot tub is registered and fenced, and we tell you that before you buy, not after.
Never sat in cold water? Try it first. Our guide to Dubai ice baths lists studios with their prices, about AED 99 to 145 a session, and saunas in Dubai does the same for heat. When you are ready to own one, send us a message.
This page covers Dubai. Power comes from DEWA, adding load needs DEWA's approval, and outdoor work in direct sun stops from 12:30 to 3 pm between 15 June and 15 September, which shapes when a garden install can happen. We plan the delivery around it.
TAQA Distribution supplies villas at 26.8 to 30.5 fils per kWh, and Abu Dhabi's wiring rules put pool pumps and jacuzzis on 30 mA protection. Zayed airport has recorded 49.3°C, so the chiller question is the same. Our Abu Dhabi page has the rest.
Sharjah's power comes from SEWA, and its airport has recorded 49.3°C in July. A built-in plunge goes through approved drawings from an accredited consultancy, which we confirm per job. Our Sharjah page has the detail.
Ajman's power comes from Etihad Water and Electricity, which designs for 50°C in the shade, and its maintenance permit costs AED 1,000 and is open to individuals. The Ajman page sets out the path.
