Which heater does a sauna room need?
We size it from your measurements before any installer quotes. Multiply length, width and height. Harvia sizes its Vega heaters by that volume: 4.5 kW for 3 to 6 m³, 6 kW for 5 to 8 m³ and 9 kW for 8 to 14 m³. A 9 kW heater at 230 V single phase draws about 39 A, which is why Harvia specifies 10 mm² cable for it on a single phase and 2.5 mm² on three. The BC60 datasheet also sets a minimum room height of 1,900 mm and 1,100 mm of clear space above the heater.
- 3 to 6 m³: 4.5 kW heater, 1 x 20 A fuse at 230 V or 3 x 10 A at 400 V.
- 5 to 8 m³: 6 kW heater, 1 x 35 A fuse at 230 V or 3 x 10 A at 400 V.
- 8 to 14 m³: 9 kW heater, 1 x 50 A fuse at 230 V or 3 x 16 A at 400 V.
The Dubai Building Code (H.4.16.5) requires sauna heaters to be installed to UL 875 and the manufacturer's instructions, so in Dubai the heater's own clearances carry the force of the code. Every offer we bring you names the heater model, so you can see it matches the room.
Wiring and approvals we raise with every installer
This is where custom builds stall, so we put it to every installer before you get an offer. DEWA Regulation 4.6.5 puts the sauna on a separate final sub-circuit from the distribution board, puts the control gear outside the sauna room, and protects every heater circuit with a 30 mA RCCB or ELCB; the Dubai Building Code repeats the control-gear rule. Under Regulation 1.14 no alteration to an installation is made without DEWA's prior approval. The added-load application is filed online by a DEWA-enrolled consultant or contractor, DEWA charges no fee for it, and a low-voltage design of 1 to 150 kW is approved in one working day by DEWA's published timeline.
Outside Dubai the details shift. In Abu Dhabi, an increase of more than 10% in a property's connected load needs the distribution company's approval and only licensed contractors may do the work. In the Northern Emirates, Etihad Water and Electricity bans sockets inside a sauna room and puts light switches outside it. Tell us the emirate and the offers you get account for it.
Then the community. Emaar requires approval for any villa alteration, and its 2022 factsheet sets an AED 500 review fee, AED 1,000 for a minor-works NOC and AED 2,000 for major works. Dubai Holding Community Management's 2026 rules require an application before any internal or external installation and state that approved works must not exceed the plot's electrical load capacity. A 9 kW heater is a load worth raising against that clause before anything is ordered, and we ask each installer who files the community application.
What does a sauna room cost to run?
Little next to the build. A worked example, not a bill: at DEWA's October 2026 rates, a slab tariff of 23 to 38 fils plus a 6 fils fuel surcharge and 5% VAT, a 9 kW heater running at full output for one hour costs AED 2.74 to AED 4.16, and a 6 kW heater AED 1.83 to AED 2.77. Both assume full output for the whole hour, and a heater cycles once the room is up to temperature. Sauna and steam in one wellness room
A sauna and a steam room can sit side by side, and one message gets you offers on both. They are different machines. A steam generator such as Harvia's Helix HGX45 is 4.5 kW for a steam room of 2 to 7 m³ and takes a 25 A supply at 230 V; the HGX90 is 9 kW for 3 to 17 m³. - Harvard Health says people with unstable chest pain (angina), poorly controlled high blood pressure or other serious heart issues should avoid saunas, and advises no longer than 15 to 20 minutes and no alcohol before or after. NHS guidance on pregnancy notes you may choose to avoid saunas because of the risks of overheating, dehydration and fainting. With Raynaud's, the NHS advises avoiding sudden changes in temperature.
