How it works
The product, where it goes, the emirate and your budget. We ask every supplier for the input power of the UAE model, so you know the running costs before you buy.
We ask the few questions that decide the price, then put your job to suppliers who sell and install exactly that product.
Their offers come back to you in one place, spec sheets attached, and we tell you which one is the best deal and why.
You buy directly from the supplier you pick, at their price, with nothing added by us. You are never obliged to buy.
The arithmetic
You want to know what a plunge or a sauna adds to the DEWA bill before you commit. Send us what you want and we get you offers with the UAE spec sheet attached, so the running cost is known on day one. The sums below show how it works: the input power on the spec sheet, times the tariff your utility publishes, is the cost of one hour of running. Each one is a worked example, not a measured bill.
What does a cold plunge cost to run per hour?
A 1 HP plunge chiller drawing 1,100 W costs AED 0.34 to 0.51 per running hour on DEWA's October 2026 tariff, from the lowest slab to the highest, with the fuel surcharge and 5% VAT. That is AED 33.50 to 50.82 per 100 running hours. A 9 kW sauna heater at full output costs AED 2.74 to 4.16 an hour. Send us your budget and we get you offers on a unit that fits it.
| Emirate | Utility | Rate per kWh | Extras |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dubai | DEWA | 23, 28, 32 or 38 fils by monthly slab | 6 fils fuel surcharge for October 2026; 5% VAT |
| Abu Dhabi, expat villa | TAQA Distribution | 26.8 fils up to an average 200 kWh a day; 30.5 fils above | No VAT line on the tariff document |
| Abu Dhabi, expat flat | TAQA Distribution | 26.8 fils up to an average 20 kWh a day; 30.5 fils above | No VAT line on the tariff document |
| Abu Dhabi, UAE national villa | TAQA Distribution | 6.7 fils up to an average 400 kWh a day; 7.5 fils above | No VAT line on the tariff document |
| Ajman and Northern Emirates | Etihad Water and Electricity | 23, 28, 32 or 38 fils by monthly slab | 5 fils surcharge; VAT not shown on the page |
| Sharjah | SEWA | Confirmed per job | Confirmed per job |
DEWA's slabs run 0 to 2,000, 2,001 to 4,000, 4,001 to 6,000 and above 6,000 kWh a month, and one table covers residential and commercial customers alike. The price rises with consumption, so a new chiller is billed at the slab your home already reaches. A villa above 6,000 kWh a month pays 38 plus 6, or 44 fils, for every extra kWh. The fuel surcharge changes monthly. TAQA Distribution's tariff took effect on 1 January 2025, after ADDC and AADC merged into it.
The spec sheet has to be the UAE version's, which is why we ask every supplier for it. Active Aqua and Plunge publish their figures for US models on 110 to 120 V at 60 Hz; DEWA designs for 230 V at 50 Hz, so the input figure for the unit you buy may differ. A half-horsepower Active Aqua chiller draws 600 W in its manual, and 510 W on its product page; we use the higher figure.
| Unit | Rated input | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Active Aqua 1/2 HP chiller | 600 W | Capacity rated at 36°C ambient; indoor use only |
| Active Aqua 1 HP chiller | 1,100 W | Capacity rated at 36°C ambient; indoor use only |
| Harvia two-person infrared cabin | 2,105 W | Spectrum Small, listed as discontinued |
| Harvia Vega sauna heaters | 4.5, 6 or 9 kW | For rooms of 3 to 6, 5 to 8 and 8 to 14 m³ |
| Harvia Helix steam generators | 4.5 or 9 kW | For rooms of 2 to 7 and 3 to 17 m³ |
| Jacuzzi J-335 hot tub | Heater rating not on the product page | Two 2.0 HP pumps and a circulation pump |
| Unit | kWh in one hour | AED per hour |
|---|---|---|
| 1/2 HP plunge chiller | 0.6 | AED 0.18 to 0.28 |
| 1 HP plunge chiller | 1.1 | AED 0.34 to 0.51 |
| Two-person infrared cabin | 2.105 | AED 0.64 to 0.97 |
| 4.5 kW sauna heater or steam generator | 4.5 | AED 1.37 to 2.08 |
| 6 kW sauna heater | 6 | AED 1.83 to 2.77 |
| 9 kW sauna heater or steam generator | 9 | AED 2.74 to 4.16 |
The 9 kW line, step by step: 9 kW x 1 hour = 9 kWh; 9 x AED 0.29 = AED 2.61 and 9 x AED 0.44 = AED 3.96; plus 5% VAT, AED 2.74 to 4.16. A two-person infrared cabin costs about a quarter of that. Our home sauna page sets infrared against traditional on price and wiring.
You may be shown monthly estimates such as AED 100 to 180 for a sauna used three times a week, or AED 130 to 280 for a steam room. Without the heater size and the hours behind them, those figures cannot be checked against a tariff the way the table above can, so we ask for both before an offer reaches you.

| Emirate and tariff | 1 HP chiller, 1.1 kWh | 9 kW sauna heater, 9 kWh |
|---|---|---|
| Dubai, DEWA, with fuel surcharge and VAT | AED 0.335 to 0.508 | AED 2.74 to 4.16 |
| Abu Dhabi, expat villa, TAQA | AED 0.295 or 0.336 | AED 2.41 or 2.75 |
| Abu Dhabi, UAE national villa, TAQA | AED 0.074 or 0.083 | AED 0.60 or 0.68 |
| Ajman and Northern Emirates, Etihad WE, with surcharge | AED 0.308 to 0.473 | AED 2.52 to 3.87 |
| Sharjah, SEWA | Confirmed per job | Confirmed per job |
The Abu Dhabi lines multiply 1.1 or 9 kWh by 26.8 or 30.5 fils for an expat villa, and 6.7 or 7.5 fils for a national's villa, depending on the home's average daily use. The Etihad WE lines add the 5 fils surcharge to the lowest and highest slabs: 28 and 43 fils. Neither document shows VAT, so those lines exclude it. We get offers for buyers in every emirate, and each emirate page covers its utility: Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Ajman.
Neither Active Aqua, Harvia nor DEWA publishes how many hours a day a home chiller or heater runs, so the unit used here is the running hour. The examples assume the unit draws its rated input for the whole hour. Multiply by your own hours, and check your next DEWA bill against it.
Summer changes the inputs, not the method. Dubai airport's mean daily high in August is 41.5°C, and DEWA designs equipment for 48°C in the shade, while Active Aqua rates its chiller capacity at 36°C and publishes no figure above it. So we ask every supplier what their chiller does at 48°C. Sizing and shade for that heat are covered on our cold plunge chiller page and in Dubai summer care.
Running cost is small next to the purchase, and the purchase is where a good offer saves you money. A cold plunge chiller alone starts at AED 7,000, an all-in-one cold plunge at AED 18,999, an infrared sauna at AED 13,999, a traditional home sauna at AED 16,950, a steam room at AED 25,000 and a hot tub at AED 18,999; the price guide has every band. For a hot tub we ask for the UAE spec sheet with the heater rating before you compare.
